Dr. Rupal Nirav Shah, a medical director, at Vama Wellness Center for Women, a sister company of Rupal Hospital, shares a few tips that will help you to face the coming months of your pregnancy and childbirth with confidence.
1. Gain a healthy amount of weight during pregnancy
Gaining the right amount of weight during pregnancy helps your baby grow in a healthy size. But gaining too much weight raises your chances for diabetes and high blood pressure during pregnancy. Don’t “eat for two”! Ideal weight gain should be 1 to 1.5 kg in the first three months, 1.5 to 2 kg in each subsequent month, and 11 to 14 kg in nine months.
2. Eat right
Eating healthy foods and the right amount of calories helps you and your baby gain the proper amount of weight. A healthy eating plan for pregnancy includes nutrient-rich foods like fruits, veggies, whole grains, low-fat milk and milk products, beans, eggs, seafood, nuts, and green leaves. It should limit salt, solid fats (like butter), and sugar-sweetened drinks and foods. For a proper pregnancy diet plan, you may consult a registered dietician.
3. Remain physically active
Be active during pregnancy by going for a walk in the nearby garden for at least 30 minutes a day. Move around at least once an hour if you are working in an office or join authentic antenatal classes.
If you have health issues like obesity, high blood pressure, and swelling, diabetes, or anemia ask your obstetrician about the quality and quantity of activity.
4. Maintain your mood
Although pregnancy hormones are responsible for the changing moods, you can control them through mind relaxing activities like yoga, reading, or socializing.
But if your mood swings are extreme or interfering with your daily life, you may be suffering from depression. If you’ve been feeling low for more than two weeks, share your feelings with your obstetrician. If required, she/he can advise psychological support.
5. Sleep is important too
Sleeping early and following a regular bedtime routine is one of the best habits for a healthy pregnancy. In the third trimester, sleep on your left side to allow for the best blood flow to the baby. Avoid lying flat on your back for a long period. To avoid sleep disturbances due to heartburn, take dinner early and avoid spicy or fried foods. If heartburn is a problem, sleep with your head elevated on pillows.
