Some of the few reasons for blocked fallopian tubes are Pelvic Infections (PID) leading to Salpingitis and Hydrosalpinx. Ectopic Pregnancy, Tubal Ligation (Birth control) Surgery, and Adhesions following Abdominal Surgery and Genital Tuberculosis.
Today, let me share a fruitful story of a patient with blocked fallopian tubes, due to family planning surgery. A poor couple from Kolkata, lost their 5 years old son, 7 years back, due to severe infection in the brain(meningitis). Besides that the unfortunate woman had undergone “Tubal Ligation” at the time of her delivery as the couple did not wanted more children in future.
But after losing her beloved son, she was under tremendous depression and could not forget about her son. So, she was brought to me for counseling and to discuss some future treatment options, to make her “Parenthood” dream real again.
In that context, I offered them two options, discussing the pros and cons of both treatment options.
The first option was to undergo tubal ligation reversal surgery, though it is a cheaper option than Test-tube baby treatment, but it is as painful as a major surgery, success rates are less than 25%, chances of ectopic pregnancy (which remains undiagnosed), can prove life-threatening and here as the patient was already 35, her eggs reserve were also declining rapidly, together with lowering the success of the procedure.
So, as a second option, they were offered IVF Treatment, in which after few days of hormonal injections treatment to prepare her eggs, her eggs were retrieved from ovaries with a minor procedure-known as “Ovum Pick Up”, and fertilization of her eggs and her husband’s sperms were done in the laboratory by IVF-ICSI procedure. (In normal circumstances, this fertilization occurs in fallopian tubes, which was not possible in her case due to birth control surgery on her fallopian tubes) and then embryos made by this procedure were transferred to the patient’s uterus. After 5 to 14 days her pregnancy test was positive and 9 months later, she delivered a baby boy. The couple was overwhelmed by having this bundle of joy again in their lives as according to them, their lost son took re-birth again to make their lives meaningful.
